Steeped in history the region of Aquitaine was for many years under English control and much of Britain's history was influenced by events here. The famous "bastide towns" - designed to be easily defended from attack - were built during the 100 years war by both the French and the English. Dating from the 12th and 13th centuries, most are still as they were then.

There are also many pre-historic sites to explore during an easy day trip - early european man evolved nearby and their amazing cave dwellings are well worth a visit.

A must is a visit to at least one of the many world famous vinyards in the area - Bordeaux, the Medoc, Saint Emillion, Pomerol, Bergerac, Monbazillac, Cahors, Duras and Pecharmont - all are here awaiting your taste-buds ! Wine tastings are available at many of the chateaux and we can arrange special vinyard tours by prior arrangement.

The village of St Barthelemy d'Agenais is a short stroll from Guinot Bas and, whilst small, offers all the essential local amenities. The village hosts a bar, boulangerie, post office and newsagent/tobacconist. In addition to this, a butchers van and fishmonger visit weekly.

France is famous for it's weekly markets and there is at least 1 every day within easy reach of Guinot Bas, many in the extremely picturesque bastide towns.
